Most visitors see Darjeeling tea through a car window, green rows on the way to somewhere else. This short break does the opposite: two nights on one working estate and nowhere else to be. Glenburn has eight suites, two rivers and a factory a short walk from your door, and it has been making tea on this spur since 1859.

It is made for the long weekend. Fly in on a Friday and you are on the verandah with a pot of tea by mid-afternoon. Saturday belongs to your hands: the factory while it runs, then an hour among the bushes learning to pluck from the women who do it every day, with lemonade carried out to you between the rows. Sunday begins with the range in your window. There is no television, and on Sunday you fly home rested rather than recovering.

There is one stop because the point is to stop. Glenburn is about 3 hours from Bagdogra, no further than Darjeeling itself, so going straight there wastes nothing. Two nights give you one whole day, and that day is shaped by the factory: leaf comes in, withers and rolls in the morning, so you see it working first and go down to the river after. Leaving at 08:30 on the third morning makes a 13:00 flight; a later flight buys you the walk to Ramitay Daara.

    Glenburn's own car and driver are at the arrivals exit at Bagdogra when you walk out, usually between 11:00 and 14:00; we sent your flight number ahead and track the plane on the day. The drive is about 85 km and 3 hours: across the plains to Sevoke, up the Teesta gorge, then up through the Peshok tea and down into the valley, the last stretch a bumpy quarter of an hour on the estate's own track. Tea on the Front Verandah while the bags go down to your Water Lily suite, where even the old bathtub looks at the mountains. Friends sharing can ask for the Camellia, the estate's only true twin, with a pair of antique single beds. We ask for the estate's own 15-minute film, The Glenburn Experience, to be played by the Living Room fire at 18:30: 1859 to now in the time it takes to finish a drink. Dinner is at 19:30, by candlelight at the long table.

    Bed tea at your hour and breakfast in the Morning Room, then the factory at 08:30, because the leaf is processed in the morning and this is when the floor is working; a tasting of the estate's teas ends it. From about 10:30 the day is in your hands. A guide walks you down into a section where the pluckers are at work, and one of them shows you the cut: two leaves and a bud, snapped from the stem and dropped into the basket slung on her back, again and again, faster than you can follow. Stay with her as long as you like. Somewhere down the slope a tray appears among the bushes with nimboo pani, the estate's fresh lemonade. The walk runs mostly downhill for 1.5 to 3 hours, as you choose, and ends at lunch on the sand by the Rung Dung. At 16:30 the jeep has you back up for a green tea oil massage in the Water Lily Bungalow's spa room before dinner.

    Every suite in the Water Lily Bungalow faces the Kanchenjunga range directly, and from October to December the snows usually show at first light. Ask for bed tea at 05:30, open the curtains of the 9-foot window and watch the summits go from grey to rose above the Singalila ridge while the valley below is still dark. Breakfast at 07:00. Your bags go to the car while you eat, and you leave at 08:30: flights from Bagdogra mostly go from 13:00, and the road back is the same 3 hours. There is nothing to settle at checkout beyond alcohol, bottled water or extras you chose, since the estate is paid 30 days ahead. If your flight leaves after 16:00, walk an hour and a half up through Bora Gaon village to Ramitay Daara after bed tea instead, eat breakfast there as a picnic among the tea with the range in front of you, and ride the jeep down in time to leave by 11:30.

  2. Papers: no permit is needed for Glenburn, which lies in West Bengal. Bring photo ID if you are Indian and an Indian visa if you are not; only Indian guests may cross the Rangeet at Manjitar into Sikkim. Details at /plan/permits-and-visas/.
  3. Steps: the Water Lily Bungalow is reached by steps. For anyone who finds stairs hard, we book a Burra Bungalow suite with its own garden entrance instead.
  4. Clothes: the bungalows stand at about 985 m, far warmer than Darjeeling, and the estate's own figures put December and January nights at 6 to 8 °C. Pack layers, walking shoes with grip, sandals you can wade in, sun cream and insect repellent for the river.
  5. Connection: there is no television and Wi-Fi reaches only parts of the bungalows, but mobile reception is good, even down by the river.
  6. Food: menus are planned around you. Tell us about allergies, Jain or vegan meals, birthdays and anniversaries, and we brief the kitchen before you land.

Why Glenburn rather than a larger tea resort?

Because the tea is on the doorstep. Glenburn has eight suites in two planters' bungalows, its own factory a short walk away, and guides who take you into the fields; meals, the tea tour and the car from Bagdogra are in its rate. Taj Chia Kutir, inside the Makaibari estate near Kurseong, is a resort of 73 rooms and suites with a spa and a heated pool. For two nights built around the leaf itself, the small house wins.

Is two nights enough on an estate?

For a first taste, yes. Two nights give one whole day: the morning factory, a plucking lesson in the fields and lunch by the river, with an evening either side. A third night adds the walk up to Ramitay Daara or the forest path down to the Manjitar footbridge. If a week in the same house appeals, One Estate, Seven Days gives Glenburn all seven nights, with a night at its river lodge.

Can we pluck tea ourselves on the estate?

Yes, in the plucking months, which at Glenburn run from late February to late November. On day two a guide takes you into a section where the pluckers are working, and one of them shows you the cut, two leaves and a bud, for as long as you want to stay. In the winter weeks the bushes are resting and being pruned, and the guide shows you that work instead.

How far is Glenburn from Bagdogra, and what if the Teesta road is shut?

About 85 km and 3 hours. The car crosses the plains to Sevoke, runs up the Teesta gorge on NH10, climbs through the Peshok gardens and drops to the estate, where the final stretch is a slow, bumpy quarter of an hour on its own track. When slides close the Teesta road, the estate's driver comes up through the Dooars and Kurseong instead, which takes longer. Darjeeling town is 1 hour 15 minutes away, if you add a day.

Which suite suits children, and which suits someone who avoids steps?

The Burra Bungalow suites open onto the main verandah with their own garden entrances and take extra beds, so they suit children and anyone who finds stairs hard; they see the mountains from the verandah. The Water Lily suites face the range from the room but are reached by a stone staircase. Children from 3 to 12 carry a nightly supplement in the parents' suite, and under-3s stay free. At the river, paddling is safe only in one marked stretch.
