What is the best short break in Darjeeling or Sikkim?
The Toy Train Weekend, for a first visit: the first night is an hour and a half away at Kurseong, and the weekend gives you Darjeeling's railway, tea slopes and town without a long road day. If you have seen Darjeeling, choose The Quiet Ridge; for rest rather than sights, Two Nights on a Tea Estate; and for Kanchenjunga at close range, Kanchenjunga, Face to Face, accepting the longer road.
Pick the break by the length of the first drive, because on two to four nights it decides how much of the break you actually spend there. Kurseong, Glenburn and Kalimpong are close enough that a midday landing still leaves an afternoon. Gangtok and Pelling are far enough that the first and last days are mostly road, which is why those breaks never run shorter than three nights and why Gangtok and the High Lake saves Tsomgo for the third day.
Then pick by where you fly in. Everest by Air and Stillness at Dhulikhel begin and end at Kathmandu's airport and suit the nonstop flights from Delhi. Three Royal Cities reaches Kathmandu from Bagdogra by road to the border and a 45-minute flight from Bhadrapur.
Passports matter more on a short break, because there is no slack for paperwork. The breaks in West Bengal need only your Indian visa. Gangtok and Pelling need Sikkim's permit for foreign and OCI guests, filed online through e-FRRO before reaching the state, about 30 days ahead, and Tsomgo needs two or more foreign guests together. In Nepal, Indian guests fly on a passport or an original voter ID, never Aadhaar.
One rule holds on every break here: never more than two bases, so you unpack once or twice and the last morning is not a race to the airport.

Two nights
If you have only two nights
Two nights leaves room for one base and one idea, and only one break here is built that way: Two Nights on a Tea Estate, Friday to Sunday at Glenburn, about three hours up from Bagdogra. Everything else needs three nights or more, because Gangtok, Pelling and Kathmandu each spend most of a day on the road or in the air.
Two things decide whether it is worth it. Land before 14:00 and you still have the afternoon; land later and you have bought one evening and one morning. And if your two nights fall between December and February, the plucking has stopped and the factory is quiet, so come for the walks, the river and the fire rather than the leaf.

Three questions about short breaks
We land at 15:00 on a Friday: which break still works?
Choose a short first drive. Kurseong, the first night of The Toy Train Weekend, is about an hour and a half up, so a 15:00 landing still arrives in time for dinner. Two Nights on a Tea Estate is the Friday-to-Sunday break, but Glenburn's car meets flights between 11:00 and 14:00, so 15:00 costs you the first evening. Avoid Pelling: later arrivals climb the last hour above Legship in the dark from October to December.
Can we take Three Royal Cities on an Indian e-Visa?
Only if you fly home from Kathmandu. The break leaves India over the Mechi bridge at Panitanki and comes back the same way, and Panitanki is not an e-Visa port, so an e-Visa cannot bring you back into India there. Fly home direct from Kathmandu, or travel on a regular Indian tourist visa. The two Kathmandu breaks avoid the question, because both fly in and out of Tribhuvan, where Nepal's visa on arrival costs US$30 for 15 days.
Which short break is best in winter?
December brings the clearest air of the year, so Kanchenjunga, Face to Face is our winter pick: Pelling looks at the massif across a single valley, and the Deluxe Suite we book has a sitting-room fire in winter. Nights there average about 3 °C in December, against 6 °C in November. For milder evenings choose The Quiet Ridge, where Kalimpong runs about 9 to 18 °C. Everest by Air is clear into early December too, only colder at dawn.
