Everest by Air is a private four-night journey from Kathmandu built around Buddha Air's dawn mountain flight past Everest, with a helicopter breakfast at 3,880 m as an option. You spend two nights in Kathmandu, with a spare morning in case cloud grounds the flight, then two on the Dhulikhel ridge.

Most people who want to see Everest do not have three weeks and a pair of strong knees. They have a long weekend. For them there is a scheduled flight that leaves Kathmandu from about 06:15, runs east along the range with every passenger at a window, and passes about 32 km from the summit before turning home. An hour later you are on the ground with a certificate in your name, thinking about breakfast. Few things in the Himalaya put so much of the high range in front of you for so little effort.

The mountain keeps you company after you land. That evening you eat at Rum Doodle, where Everest summiteers eat free and sign the wall, Hillary first. If you would rather stand in front of the mountain than fly past it, a helicopter can set you down on a terrace at 3,880 m for breakfast, with Ama Dablam across the valley. Then the pace drops to a resort on the ridge east of the valley, a lane walk to Namo Buddha, and the snow line along the northern horizon from your balcony.

The route

Why Kathmandu comes first

Kathmandu comes first because the mountain flights leave its domestic terminal at dawn. We book yours for the first full morning and keep the second free in case cloud cancels it. The helicopter, if you add it, flies on that second morning, never before the plane. Dhulikhel comes last, an hour and a half east and away from the city's traffic, so the final two days are slow and the drive back to the airport is short.

    Nonstop flights from Delhi reach Tribhuvan through the day, and Buddha Air's service from Kolkata lands at about 11:05 on the days it flies. Coming from Bagdogra instead, we drive you through Kakarbhitta to the afternoon flight from Bhadrapur. Your guide meets you beyond customs, and the car takes about 25 minutes to Durbar Marg and Hotel Yak & Yeti, built round Lal Durbar, a Rana palace of 1885. Rest or swim. At 18:00 your guide sits with you for ten minutes to go through tomorrow: the 05:10 pickup, what to wear, which side the peaks appear on first. Dinner is at The Chimney, which grew from the restaurant Boris Lissanevitch, the Russian dancer behind Nepal's first luxury hotel, opened in Lal Durbar; its copper hood is about sixty years old. We reconfirm your seat with the airline that evening, and the kitchen packs coffee and a breakfast box for the car. Lights out by 21:30.

    The car leaves at 05:10 through empty streets, and by 05:30 your guide has you checked in at the domestic terminal. Departures start from about 06:15, and the aircraft wait on the ground if the range is not yet clear. Buddha Air fills only half the cabin, so every passenger has a window. The peaks rise on the left going out: Langtang Lirung first, Shishapangma across the border in Tibet, then Cho Oyu, and at the far end Lhotse and Everest, with Chamlang beyond. On the turn for home the right side takes the view. On some flights the crew call passengers forward one at a time for a minute at the cockpit door, the range straight ahead through the windscreen; it is the captain's call on the day rather than a fixture, so treat it as a gift if it comes. You land about an hour after take-off, and Buddha Air hands every passenger an Everest Experience certificate with their name on it. Breakfast in the hotel garden is ready by 08:00; sleep until lunch. At 16:00 the car takes you to the western car park at Swayambhunath, the short way up, for the valley in late light. Dinner at 19:30 is at Rum Doodle in Naxal, where the wall of Everest summiteers' signatures began with Edmund Hillary's.

    Two ways to spend this morning. With the helicopter, the car leaves at 05:45 and you lift off about 06:30, refuel at Lukla and fly up the Dudh Koshi towards the head of the Khumbu. At Hotel Everest View, opened by Takashi Miyahara in 1971 at 3,880 m, breakfast is laid on the terrace with Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam across the valley. We keep the stop to about 45 minutes, and you are back in Kathmandu before 11:00. Without it, sleep late, swim, and walk ten minutes to the Garden of Six Seasons at Kaiser Mahal, a neo-classical garden laid out in 1920. Either way, lunch is at 12:30 and the car leaves at 13:30 for the ridge east of the valley, about 45 km through Banepa and past Dhulikhel's old town. By about 15:15 you are at the Dusit Thani, in a Deluxe Himalayan View room with a balcony, and the terrace by the infinity pool takes the last of the light.

    Walking to Namo Buddha, Panauti after lunch

    Open the curtains at sunrise, about 06:00 in mid-October and 06:20 in mid-November, and watch the range take colour from your bed; on a clear morning Langtang and Gauri Shankar are the big names. Breakfast at 07:30. At 08:30 your guide walks you 3 km along the ridge to Namo Buddha, about an hour on a quiet lane, with the car following in case you tire. The white stupa at the end of the lane marks a story from one of the Buddha's earlier lives, and above it sits Thrangu Tashi Yangtse, a monastery founded in 1978 and home to more than 250 monks. The chanting session with the monks that the resort arranges is booked for you: sit at the back and let the chant run its course. At 12:00 the car runs 8 km down to Panauti for lunch in the old town, a slow hour in the courtyard of Indreshwar Mahadev, its great Shiva temple, and the small museum in the temple compound. Back by 15:30 for the Devarana spa.

  5. Day 5 · Dhulikhel Kathmandu airport (KTM)

    No alarm today unless you want one more look at the range from the balcony, and breakfast is on the terrace when you are ready. For flights home to Delhi after 14:00, the car leaves at 10:00 and reaches Tribhuvan's international terminal at about 11:30, back along the Araniko Highway, and your guide stays with you to the check-in door. Flying back to Bagdogra, you leave at 07:30 for Buddha Air's 09:45 to Bhadrapur, or at 10:30 for the 12:50, and our car from the hills meets you at Panitanki for the last 22 km. On an Indian e-Visa there is no way back in at that crossing, so we route you home by air from Tribhuvan. If cloud took the Everest flight on both Kathmandu mornings and your flight home leaves in the afternoon, this is the last chance: we leave at 04:30 for the 06:15 departure, and you are at breakfast in the city by 08:00 with the whole range behind you.

  1. Carry the same ID on the mountain flight as on your flight in: a valid passport or original Voter ID for Indian guests, and Nepal's visa for other passports. The full rules are on /plan/permits-and-visas/#documents.
  2. The mountain flight is pressurised and seated, so altitude is no concern. The helicopter breakfast is another matter: 3,880 m with no time to adjust. Ask your doctor first about heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, or pregnancy.
  3. Helicopters carry at most five people with a limit of roughly 100 to 110 kg each. Tell us everyone's weight when you book so the operator can balance the seats.
  4. Dress in layers. Kathmandu dawns are cool in October and November, the ridge is colder at night, and the terrace at Hotel Everest View can be near freezing at breakfast.

How close does the Everest mountain flight get to Everest?

Close enough to see the summit pyramid clearly. Buddha Air puts Everest about 32 km from the window at the far end of an hour-long run east from Kathmandu, past Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma, Cho Oyu and Lhotse. The airline fills only half the seats so everyone has a window, and hands every passenger a certificate with their name on it afterwards; on some flights the crew also call passengers forward to the cockpit door, which is theirs to offer and not ours to promise. The aircraft flies beside the range, never over the summit, and does not land.

What happens if the Everest flight is cancelled because of cloud?

The airline rebooks or refunds when the range is hidden, and we plan for it. Your seat is booked for the first full morning, and the second morning in Kathmandu is kept free as a reserve. If both are lost and your flight home leaves in the afternoon, a dawn start from Dhulikhel on the last day gives a third chance. October and November give the best odds of a clear morning.

Is the helicopter breakfast at Hotel Everest View safe for older parents?

It depends on their health, so ask their doctor first. The hotel stands at 3,880 m, and the helicopter takes you there from Kathmandu's 1,400 m in under an hour, with no time to acclimatise. We keep the stop to about 45 minutes, skip the higher landings some tours make at Kala Patthar, and fly early. Anyone advised against altitude sees the same range from the pressurised mountain flight.

When is the best time for the Everest mountain flight?

October and November, when the monsoon has cleared and the air is driest. December stays clear but colder, and from late December into February fog can sit on Kathmandu's runway at dawn and delay the first departures until it lifts; on 29 January 2026 it shut the airport from 07:20. In those weeks your guide follows the airline's updates from 04:45 and keeps you at breakfast, not in the domestic hall. March and April are hazier.

Can you see Everest from Dhulikhel?

Not reliably. Dhulikhel looks north to the central Himalaya, with Langtang, Gauri Shankar and their neighbours along the horizon, clearest at sunrise between October and March. Everest lies far to the east and is too distant to count on from the ridge. That is why this journey puts you on the mountain flight first and brings you to Dhulikhel afterwards, for the long view and the quiet.

Can we walk to an Everest view instead of flying?

Yes, if 15 km on a hill day suits you. The Singalila Ridge, our walking journey out of Darjeeling, reaches Sandakphu, and from its 3,636 m you look north-west across roughly 145 km to Everest, small but unmistakable, with Kanchenjunga far closer on your right. Allow five nights, two of them up on the ridge in plain lodges. On the Nepal side, Nagarkot at 2,195 m shows Everest only as a speck far to the east, and only on the clearest mornings.
