Kanchenjunga, Face to Face is a private three-night short break on the Pelling ridge in West Sikkim, built around three dawns facing the 8,586 m massif. You drive about 135 km from Bagdogra airport (IXB) to The Elgin Mount Pandim, give one day to Pemayangtse and Rabdentse and one to Khecheopalri Lake and Yuksom, then drive back.

Not for you iffive and a half hours of mountain road each way feels too much for three nights, Gangtok and the High Lake sits closer to the airport, and Kanchenjunga at First Light shows the mountain from three ridges over a week.

Pelling grew up around two monasteries and a view. Kanchenjunga stands 45 km to the north, and between the ridge and the snow lie only forested valleys: no town, no haze from the plains, nothing built. From here the massif is not a line on the horizon but a wall with faces, glaciers and shadow, and Pandim, 6,691 m, stands nearer still. Three nights give you three dawns at it, the honest minimum, because the mountain keeps its own diary.

What sets this short break apart is how little of it happens in a car once you arrive. The house stands under a kilometre from Pemayangtse, and the forest path to Rabdentse starts a few minutes away, so two of your mornings are walked. A monk takes you up to Pemayangtse's top floor, you sit where Rabdentse's judges once gave their verdicts, and you stand on Khecheopalri's jetty before the day's cars. The afternoons are left slow on purpose: the fire in your sitting room, a book, the spa, and the light going off the snows.

Pelling, 3 nights

With one stop, the order is about hours, not places. The first full day stays close to the house: dawn from your suite, Pemayangtse before the tour groups, Rabdentse before lunch, so you settle into the ridge without long spells in a car. The valley day to Khecheopalri and Yuksom comes second, starting from a different dawn viewpoint. The last sunrise is watched from the window before a 06:30 departure, because Bagdogra is five and a half hours away and afternoon flights are the safe ones.

    At the Bagdogra arrivals exit your driver raises a card with your name, and in the car waits a lunch box packed in Siliguri that morning: sandwiches, fruit and a flask of Darjeeling tea, so the road never waits on a restaurant. Before you landed he asked the drivers working the Teesta how NH10 looked. The road runs about 133 km and five and a half hours, up the Teesta into Sikkim at Melli, where foreign guests show the printed permit, then along the Rangeet. Jorethang, on the river at 322 m, is the low point of the day: your room stands about 1,700 m above it, and most of that height comes in the last hour, as the road leaves Legship and winds up through Gyalshing. From October to December that hour runs in the dark. Expect The Elgin Mount Pandim around 18:00. At our request the staff switched on your heaters at 17:00, and the hot-water bags are already between the sheets. Dinner in the Magnolia dining room, then sleep: tomorrow begins at 05:15.

    Your guide stands on the lawn at 05:15 and reads the sky. If the peaks are clear he sends a message, and you open the curtains from bed. Sunrise comes near 05:37 in mid October and 06:19 in mid December, and the snow colours some fifteen minutes earlier. Kabru stands on the left, Kanchenjunga beside it, and on the right Pandim, the peak that gives the house its name, closest of all at about 31 km. Breakfast at 07:30. At 08:30 you walk under a kilometre to Pemayangtse, ahead of the mid-morning groups; yesterday we asked the monastery office for a monk to take you to the top floor, where Guru Rinpoche's palace stands in carved wood. At 10:30 the car leaves you at Rabdentse's yellow gate for a 15-minute forest path past a pond to the palace wings, three chortens and Namphogang, the stone seat where judges gave their verdicts. Lunch at the house; spa or sleep after.

    The second dawn comes from another angle. At 05:15 the Pelling car we booked last night climbs the short road to the open helipad ground in Upper Pelling, where the range runs west to east with nothing in front of it; a flask, a blanket and two folding stools ride in the boot. Breakfast back at 07:00, and at 08:00 the valley road to Khecheopalri, 27 km. You reach the lake near 09:15, when the water is still and green and the prayer-wheel jetty is empty, and you walk out along it turning each wheel. Then 21 km on to Yuksom. At Norbugang your guide takes you past the stone seats under the pine where Sikkim's first king was crowned to a footprint pressed into the rock, said to belong to one of the lamas who crowned him. Lunch in Yuksom at 12:30. Walkers climb an hour above the village to Dubdi, where the caretaker monk has word to expect you; everyone else keeps the Norbugang garden. Back on the ridge by 17:00.

    The third dawn is yours without leaving the room. Last night the kitchen agreed to send breakfast to the suite at 05:45, so you eat facing the range while it colours, and your cases went down to the car before you woke. Wheels roll at 06:30. Within the first hour you have dropped 1,400 m to Legship; Jorethang passes near 08:30, and at Melli the checkpost waves you out of Sikkim onto the Teesta road. Bagdogra comes at about 12:00, which is why we ask for a flight after 14:00. For anything earlier we leave at 05:30, and you trade the last sunrise for the timetable. Your guide says goodbye at the gate on the ridge. Once you are through security, a message to the designer who planned the journey closes the loop; the 24x7 line answers until you are home.

  1. Papers: Indian guests carry photo ID for the Melli checkpost. Foreign and OCI guests need the Sikkim permit, filed online through e-FRRO about 30 days ahead; the full rules are on /plan/permits-and-visas/.
  2. Clothing: the 05:15 sky check and the helipad dawn are the coldest hours of the trip, and Pelling nights average about 6 °C in November and 3 °C in December. Pack a down jacket, a warm hat and gloves, and shoes with grip for the forest path at Rabdentse.
  3. Motion: long stretches of the road are hairpins. Take any motion-sickness tablet at the airport, not after Legship.
  4. Signal: mobile coverage is fair on the ridge and patchy in the valleys towards Yuksom. Download maps and music before you land. Visitors from abroad do best with an Indian eSIM bought before the flight.
  5. Cash: keep small notes for monastery offerings, tea and the lake; cards are useful at the house and little else.
  6. Children and parents: the Elgin's cottages sit downhill on a steep path. For anyone unsteady on steps we ask for a room in the main building, close to the dining room, and confirm it in writing.

Is three nights in Pelling too much road for a long weekend?

It is the honest trade-off. Bagdogra is about five and a half hours away each way, so the first and last days are mostly road, with two full days and three dawns between them. For Pelling on its own, three nights is the least we would plan. If that is too much driving, Gangtok and the High Lake sits closer to the airport, or begin with two Darjeeling nights, which leaves about 70 km to Pelling.

What time do we need to be up for each dawn?

On day 2 your guide stands on the lawn at 05:15 and sends a message only if the peaks are clear, so you can watch from bed. Sunrise falls near 05:37 in mid October, 05:57 in mid November and 06:19 in mid December, and the snow takes colour about fifteen minutes earlier. The helipad dawn on day 3 means leaving at 05:15, and on the last morning breakfast reaches your suite at 05:45.

Which flights work with this journey?

Land at Bagdogra by 11:30 if you can. Later arrivals climb the last hour above Legship in the dark from October to December and miss the Rangeet valley in daylight. Book the flight home after 14:00: we leave Pelling at 06:30 and reach the airport near 12:00. For an earlier flight we leave at 05:30 and you give up the last sunrise. Pakyong, near Gangtok, had no scheduled flights in 2025-26.

What do we do on a cloudy morning in Pelling?

Nobody can promise the mountain, so the plan bends around the sky. Your guide reads it at 05:15 before waking anyone. If day 2 dawns grey, the days swap: Khecheopalri and Yuksom first, and Pemayangtse and Rabdentse move to day 3, since both work in any weather. You still have the helipad dawn and a last morning at your window, and a fourth night buys one more chance.

Should we choose a suite or a cottage at the Elgin?

The journey is built on a Deluxe Suite: a bedroom with its own sitting room, a fire there in winter, an electric heater and hot-water bags. The Premium Cottages have balconies facing the mountains and their own winter fire, and cost a little more, but they sit downhill on a steep garden path. For anyone unsteady on steps the main building is kinder. Either way, we ask the house which rooms face the range before we confirm.

How is this different from Kanchenjunga at First Light?

First Light spends seven nights on three ridges, Darjeeling, Pelling and Kalimpong, and adds Tiger Hill at 2,590 m, with two nights at the Elgin. Face to Face gives all three nights to Pelling, the closest of those ridges to the massif, so you meet the same wall of snow on three mornings and barely use a car between the two long drives. Choose First Light for variety, Face to Face for depth.
