The route

Why Darjeeling comes first

Darjeeling comes first because it is the simplest climb from Bagdogra, 70 km, and because two easy days at 2,000 m settle you before the Tiger Hill start. Pelling follows, about 70 km away across the Rangeet, for the closest view once the hills feel familiar. Kalimpong closes the journey about 800 m lower and warmer, only 80 km from the airport, so the last morning is unhurried and a 13:00 flight is comfortable.

Day 1 · Bagdogra airport Darjeeling

Up through the tea to a fire on Observatory Hill

At the arrivals exit a driver from the hills holds a board with your name, and the car has water, blankets folded on the back seat and the front seat free for whoever feels the bends. The climb to Darjeeling is about 70 km and 3 hours, by whichever road the hill drivers report clear that morning. Near Ghum the road tops its saddle at 2,258 m, and if the afternoon is clear this is where the range may show itself first, higher in the sky and further off than you expect. You reach the Windamere near 16:00. Yesterday we asked the hotel to test the heater, the hot water and the quilts in your suite, and to lay the fire for dusk. Tea by the fire, then dinner in the old dining room. Keep the evening quiet and the wine light: day three begins well before dawn.

Day 2 · Darjeeling

Mahakal before the town wakes, the Mall's north side by day

At 06:00 your guide knocks. Out of the Windamere's gate, a lane of a few minutes climbs to the top of Observatory Hill and Mahakal, the shrine that Hindus and Buddhists keep together, its bells already ringing and its prayer flags hung layer on layer. At that hour it belongs to the bell-ringers and a handful of early walkers, and on a clear morning the snows stand above the flags. Breakfast at 07:30. At 09:25 the steam engine pulls out for Ghum with you in first class, seats booked the day the railway released them, and has you back by about 11:10. After lunch, walk the Mall's north side, the stretch of road that curves round the back of Observatory Hill with nothing between the railing and the range. Take a bench and watch the mountain change as the afternoon cloud rises and falls about it; this is where people from the town come to look at it. Meanwhile your driver joins the queue for tomorrow's Tiger Hill token.

InsiderCarry nothing edible up the Mahakal lane. The monkeys on Observatory Hill know a paper bag of sweets when they see one, and they are quicker than you.

If the weather turnsIf the steam engine is out of service, we take the diesel joy ride to Ghum. If the ridge is in cloud all afternoon, the Mall walk moves to 07:00 on day four, before breakfast and the drive.

Day 3 · Darjeeling

Tiger Hill in the dark, the looms of Lebong by afternoon

Yesterday afternoon your driver stood in the queue at the Sadar traffic office, where 550 of the day's Tiger Hill tokens are handed out, first come, between 08:00 and 20:00. The token belongs to the car, not to you, and without it no car climbs the hill. At 03:30 your guide reads the sky. If it is clear, the car is outside at 04:00, or 04:30 from November to March, with blankets and a flask. About 1.5 km past Ghum station it turns up the steep Senchal road, past the dark water of Senchal Lake and through the sanctuary forest, to the top at 2,590 m. Your guide goes ahead to take seats on the upper floor of the viewing pavilion, which sees best. Sunrise comes near 05:36 in mid October and 06:18 in mid December, but the mountain does not wait for it: Kanchenjunga takes rose light first, then gold, then white, while the valleys below are still black. On the clearest mornings look west for Everest, about 170 km off, with Makalu a little nearer, and north-east for Chomolhari on the Bhutan and Tibet border. Breakfast back at the Windamere, then sleep. At 14:00 the car drops to Lebong and the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, at work since 2 October 1959 on the hillside where the 13th Dalai Lama lived during his exile of 1910 to 1912: carpet looms, thangka painters and woodcarvers, and a hall of photographs of the first refugees. Afternoon tea at 16:30 is the Windamere's own, booked ahead.

InsiderMost of the crowd turns east to watch the sun come up. Face north: Kanchenjunga colours minutes before the sun reaches the hill, and that is the moment you came for.

If the weather turnsCloud on the 03:30 forecast means we cancel and you sleep; if day two looked clearer, we will already have swapped the mornings. The Self Help Centre is closed on Sundays, so on a Sunday it moves to day two.

Day 4 · Darjeeling Pelling

Down to the Rangeet, up to the Pelling ridge

Breakfast at 07:30, the car at 08:30. The road falls about 1,800 m through tea and forest to the Rangeet at Jorethang, 322 m, where the air turns warm enough to shed a layer, then climbs by Legship and Gyalshing to the Pelling ridge: about 70 km and 4 hours. Indian guests show photo ID at the Sikkim post. Foreign and OCI guests show the permit filed for them online through e-FRRO about 30 days ahead; if it does not name Jorethang, we cross at Melli instead, about an hour longer. You reach The Elgin Mount Pandim around 12:30, to a Deluxe Suite on the mountain side of the house and lunch in the Magnolia dining room. At 15:30 your guide walks you 15 minutes along a forest path to Rabdentse, Sikkim's capital from 1670 to 1814, where the ruined walls and chortens stand on a spur looking north. Stay until the light leaves the snows. Tomorrow's dawn is from the garden, so leave the curtains open.

Day 5 · Pelling

Pemayangtse at seven, the walk to Dubdi by noon

Your guide looks at the sky at 05:15 and rings only if the range is out. From the mountain side of the house Kanchenjunga stands about 45 km away, and its summits colour before the sun touches the garden. At 07:00 you walk to Pemayangtse while the day's visitors are still at breakfast. We asked yesterday for a monk to meet you on the top floor, where Zangdok Palri, Guru Rinpoche's heavenly palace, stands in carved and painted wood, five years of Dungzin Rinpoche's work. Breakfast at 08:30. At 09:30 a Pelling car takes you 33 km to Yuksom and the coronation throne at Norbugang under its pine. From the village a path climbs about 3 km through forest, an hour on foot, to Dubdi, whose name means the retreat. It stands on a spur at 2,100 m, two storeys of stone under a gilded finial, and its one resident monk keeps statues of the three lamas who crowned Sikkim's first king, with old manuscripts shelved in the side aisles. Lunch in Yuksom. Khecheopalri Lake at 16:00 on the way back: walk the prayer-wheel jetty in the late light.

Day 6 · Pelling Kalimpong

Across two rivers to the quieter ridge

One more dawn from Pelling, breakfast at 08:00, and your own driver at the door at 09:00. The road falls past Legship to the Rangeet, follows it to Jorethang and meets the Teesta at Melli, where you leave Sikkim, then makes the last climb to Kalimpong: about 93 km, arriving near 13:00. Your room at the MAYFAIR is a Deluxe Kanchenjunga View Room of 58 sq m that faces north, your third angle on the mountain. Lunch is waiting. At 15:30 your guide takes you to the Lepcha Museum, the collection of Sonam Tshering Lepcha: born in Kalimpong in 1928, the first Lepcha voice on All India Radio in 1960, the author of more than 400 folk songs, and a Padma Shri in 2007. The cases hold the instruments his music came from, old weapons and manuscripts of the people who were in these hills first. Before dinner, ask for your fire to be lit.

Day 7 · Kalimpong

Deolo as the gate opens, Tharpa Choling by afternoon

Your driver reads the sky at 05:15 and calls you only if the snows look likely. The car leaves at 05:40, climbing past the cottages of Dr Graham's Homes, to be at the Deolo gate when it opens at 06:00. In October and November you arrive with the sun already up; in December you come for the sunrise itself. From the top the mountain you watched from Tiger Hill and met close at Pelling is a white line far to the north, low above rows of blue ridges, with the Teesta's gorge between you and Sikkim. Coffee and a blanket on a bench, and no one in a hurry. Breakfast back at the hotel at 08:00, then the day is for the house: the spa, the garden, a book. At 16:00 your guide drives you up Tirpai hill to Tharpa Choling, the Gelug monastery that Tibetan merchants and Bhutanese leaders living in Kalimpong asked Domo Geshe Rinpoche to found in 1912. We ask for your fire to be laid by 17:00.

Day 8 · Kalimpong Bagdogra airport

A last look north, then the Teesta road to Bagdogra

The last dawn is your own: bed tea at the north-facing window, or Deolo again at 06:00 if yesterday was cloud. Breakfast from 07:00. The road down follows the Teesta to Sevoke and the plains, about 80 km and 3 hours, and your driver confirms before breakfast that it is running cleanly. The car leaves at 08:30 for flights from 13:00 and reaches Bagdogra at about 11:30. Whatever you bought on the way, tea from Darjeeling or cheese from Kalimpong, was wrapped for the cabin last night and rides on the back seat. The 24x7 line stays open until you land at home.

Papers: Indian citizens show a passport, voter ID or driving licence at the Sikkim post. Foreign and OCI guests need Sikkim's permit, filed online through e-FRRO about 30 days ahead, so send passport and visa scans when you book. The rules are at /plan/permits-and-visas/#who-needs-what.
The Tiger Hill morning is the coldest hour of the week: before dawn at 2,590 m it is several degrees below the town, where nights run about 10 °C in October and 4 °C in December. Bring a down jacket, hat and gloves, and shoes with grip for the lanes of Observatory Hill and the Dubdi path.
Altitude: you stand no higher than 2,590 m and sleep no higher than 2,134 m, so no acclimatisation is needed. Our altitude rules are at /plan/before-you-travel/#altitude-rules.
Days four and six are four-hour mountain drives with many hairpins. If bends trouble you, take the front seat and eat lightly before setting off; the car carries ginger sweets.
Cash: Yuksom rarely takes cards, and monastery offerings are in cash. All three hotels take cards.
Signal: expect gaps in the Rangeet and Teesta valleys on days four, six and eight.
Cameras: ask before photographing monks or the inside of a monastery hall, and leave the drone at home.

Six questions about Kanchenjunga at First Light

Which of the three ridges gives the best view, and why sleep on all three?

Each shows a different mountain. Tiger Hill, at 2,590 m, gives the widest scene: the whole range across the northern sky and, on the clearest mornings, Everest about 170 km to the west. Pelling, about 45 km from the summit, is the closest, near enough to pick out separate peaks and glaciers. Deolo, across the Teesta, is the most distant and the calmest. Sleeping on all three also gives you seven dawns, so one cloudy morning never costs you the mountain.

Can the Tiger Hill morning move if the forecast is poor?

Yes, within Darjeeling. Tokens go to the car one day ahead, so if the evening forecast favours day two over day three, your driver queues a day earlier and we swap the two mornings. Your guide still reads the sky at 03:30 and cancels if cloud sits on the ridge, and you sleep. After Darjeeling, four more dawns follow, from the Elgin's garden at Pelling, from Deolo and from your north-facing window in Kalimpong.

Why seven nights, and what would we lose with five?

Seven nights give three in Darjeeling, two in Pelling and two in Kalimpong, with no drive over four hours and at least two dawns at every house. With five, we would drop Kalimpong: you keep Tiger Hill and Pelling's close view but lose the third angle, and the last drive, Pelling to Bagdogra, grows to about five and a half hours. With ten, add Gangtok, or two nights on the Singalila Ridge where Everest joins the view.

Kanchenjunga at First Light or The First Time?

Both reach Darjeeling and Pelling. The First Time adds Gangtok and a high day to Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 m over eight nights, and suits a first visit that wants Sikkim's capital and the snowline. Kanchenjunga at First Light never climbs above Tiger Hill's 2,590 m and swaps Gangtok for Kalimpong, so every house is chosen for its view of the mountain. Choose it if the mountain, not a list of sights, is the reason you came.

Is this the right journey if tea matters more than the view?

Probably not. You sleep on no tea estate here, and the leaf is something you drive past. The Planter's Week, six nights from ₹1,80,000 per person, spends its time on the working side of tea: two inside Makaibari at Kurseong, two at Glenburn above the Rangeet, then the Windamere. If you want both, ask us to price Glenburn in place of the Kalimpong nights: its four Water Lily suites look straight at the range.

Will we see the mountain from our rooms?

We ask for the mountain side at every house. At the Windamere that means a Colonial Suite on the Kanchenjunga side, away from the 2026 restoration works.
