Darjeeling in the Puja and Diwali weeks: clear skies, a full town, and how we plan around both

October is the month we would choose for a first visit to these hills, and the month we most often ask people to move. The rains have usually gone by the first week, and the air is clean enough to pick the Singalila ridge out of the western sky from the Mall. It is also the fortnight when Bengal takes its Puja holidays and the hills keep Dashain, when the towns are at their fullest and every good room between Kurseong and Kalimpong is taken.

Both things are true, and the answer is not to avoid October. It is to know which day is which, to sleep in the right place and to book in the right order. For the weather month by month, read when to see Kanchenjunga; the festival calendar for the whole region sits on our when to go page.

Two festivals, two calendars, one fortnight

This district keeps two autumn festivals side by side, which is why October reads confusingly from outside. Bengali families keep Durga Puja, five days closing with Vijaya Dashami and the immersion of the idol. The Nepali-speaking majority, who are most of the people here, keep Dashain, the longer fifteen-day festival, with Phulpati on the seventh day and the tika from the elders on the last. In 2026 the two calendars close on the same Wednesday, so the whole district is out of doors on 21 October. That coincidence is the single most useful fact on this page: in most years the two peaks fall days apart and the pressure is spread, and in 2026 it lands in one go.

For next year the whole fortnight moves earlier. In 2027 Bengal's Puja days run from Shashthi on 5 October to Vijaya Dashami on 10 October, and Tihar falls from 27 to 31 October, with Laxmi Puja on 29 October. Almanacs differ by a day on Navami, so we confirm the date against the Kolkata panchang before a plan leans on it. The consequence for you: in 2027 the two crowded weeks sit further apart, and the quiet fortnight starts in the first week of November.

What the towns actually do

Darjeeling's oldest Durga Puja is not on the Mall. It is kept at the Nipendra Narayan Bengali Hindu Hall at Chandmari, a building of 1890, and the puja there began in 1915. It keeps a practice you will see nowhere else: on the last day the idol is carried out on a bamboo frame, taken round the town to the railway station, and put on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to go down the hill for immersion at Bangla Khola. If you are in town on Dashami, ask your guide for the hour and stand where the road meets the line.

Dashain is quieter, and most of it happens indoors, which is why visitors walk straight past it. Kitchens work for days. Goats and chickens change hands in the bazaars, and the jamara sown on the first day comes up pale yellow. On the tika day the youngest of a family sit in front of the oldest, and by mid morning the roads fill with people carrying gifts to their parents' houses. Ask before you photograph any of it, and take the answer you are given.

What jams, and at what hour

• Tiger Hill, from 04:00. The hill takes a fixed number of cars a morning, on a token your driver collects the afternoon before; how that queue works is in Kanchenjunga at First Light. What changes in these weeks is the hour the tokens run out, so the queue starts in the morning rather than after lunch. The other cost is the road: in the holiday fortnight the 06:30 descent meets the jeeps still coming up. If one clear dawn is all you want, Chatakpur or Jalapahar will give it to you with nobody in the frame.
• Hill Cart Road and the bazaars, 10:00 to 18:00. Every hill town's traffic is one road wide. Kurseong, Sonada and Ghum slow to walking pace on holiday weekends, and a three-hour run from the airport can take four and a half. We move guests before 09:00 or after 18:00 in this fortnight, and put it on the plan rather than discover it on the day.
• Chowrasta and the Mall after 16:00. The square is the town's sitting room, full until late in Puja week. Worth seeing once, not where we send anyone who came for quiet.

Where we sleep in these weeks

The town is what everyone is queuing for, so we usually sleep outside it and come in early. Four choices, rated as for our own family.

The toy train in the Puja weeks

The railway is the one thing October makes easier rather than harder, because the holidays bring extra services. For 2026 the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway announced six special runs from 1 October: four one-way diesel trips between Darjeeling and Ghum, leaving Darjeeling at 09:20 and 11:25 and Ghum at 10:25 and 12:30, at ₹800 a trip; and two round trips between Kurseong and Mahanadi, the steam-hauled Red Panda at ₹1,530 and the diesel Mukta Dhara at ₹1,030, named after Tagore's play of 1922. Diwali here is Tihar, and it runs five days

Guests write to us asking about Diwali in Darjeeling and mean one night. In these hills it is Tihar, and it is five days: Lights of Tihar takes them one at a time. What matters for planning is that two festivals overlap. Laxmi Puja on 8 November is the night the plains call Diwali, and Darjeeling's Bengali families keep Kali Puja on the same new moon, so the crackers come from both and go on well past midnight. Bhai Tika on 11 November is also Bengal's Bhratridwitiya, so both communities are feeding brothers on the same afternoon, and a restaurant table that evening is harder to find than a hotel room.

If anyone in your party has asthma or cannot bear bangs, tell us: we ask for the quieter side of the house and pack earplugs. Tihar is also a travelling festival for the hills themselves, so the roads to the plains fill on the last morning as people who came home go back to work.

How to be a guest in someone else's festival

• Give to the Bhailo and Deusi singers after the last verse, not during it. Notes, sweets or fruit, handed over with your right hand. The song ends with a blessing on the house, and leaving before it is the one real rudeness.
• A family's Bhai Tika comes at the hour its almanac gives, and that hour belongs to them. We never put you in a stranger's house for it; we ask a family we know whether they will receive you afterwards, and tell you when you book whether one can that year.
• Ask before you photograph a tika, a kitchen or an animal being garlanded, and put the phone away when the answer is no.
• Take your shoes off where you see others have. Do not step over food, or over anyone sitting on the floor.
• If sel roti is pressed on you, take it in your right hand and eat some of it. Refusing food is harder work than eating it.
• Your driver and guide have families keeping the same festival. We tell you at the planning stage which days they have asked to be at home, and who is with you instead, so nothing comes as a surprise on the road.

If your dates can move, and if they cannot

If they can move, move them past Tihar. Which fortnight we would pick instead, and what it costs you in night temperatures, is set out in when to see Kanchenjunga. Nothing in this note argues against it.

If they cannot move, come anyway, and in this order: sleep out of town, see the town before 09:00, keep the middle of the day for the estate or the garden, and watch the dawn from the north side of the Mall rather than joining the jeep queue. October's sky is worth the crowd. October's crowd is not worth a bad plan.
