Honeymoons in these hills usually go wrong in one of two ways: whole days lost to the back seat of a car, or a string of 04:00 alarms to queue for sunrises. This one is built against both. No road runs past five hours, nothing starts before 09:00, and the week's single dawn is watched from a four-poster, with bed tea on the tray and the curtains open to the range.

What you get instead is time in three rooms chosen for two people: a suite on a working tea estate that faces the snows from the bed, a heritage room in Kalimpong where the fire is lit before you come back, and a forest resort above Gangtok with a spa built for sleep. Every kitchen hears about the occasion, the allergies and the cake before you land. The permits, the tables and the handover to a Sikkim car are ours to handle, so the only timetable you keep is your own.

Why Glenburn Tea Estate comes first

Glenburn comes first because it is lowest, warmest and three hours from the airport: land, drive, and be on a verandah by tea. Three nights there let the week slow down before anything else happens. Kalimpong is two hours east across the Teesta, and Pangthang three and a half beyond it, so each move is a morning, never a day. The beds climb gently, from 985 m to about 1,870 m. Run it the other way and your first afternoon is five hours on NH10.

Land around noon. Your driver waits at the arrivals exit with a card bearing only your first names. The road runs 85 km, about three hours, up the Teesta and then off it at the Peshok Road, climbing through tea until the estate's own rough track takes the last 3 km. Around 15:45 the Burra Bungalow's verandah appears with a late lunch laid on it: we sent the kitchen your landing time from the airport. On the table are the cake and flowers Glenburn keeps for couples. Your suite is the Singalila, in the Water Lily Bungalow, down a flight of stone steps: an antique four-poster, hand-embroidered linen, flowers from the garden and a bath with a view. Run the bath, open the bay window and let the valley go blue. Dinner tonight is for the two of you only, in the smaller dining room of your own bungalow, at 20:00.

This is the week's one dawn, and it is optional. First light reaches the range around 05:40 in late October and around 06:00 in November; ask for bed tea a quarter of an hour before and leave the curtains open, because the Singalila Suite faces the peaks from the bed itself. Then sleep again. Breakfast comes at 09:00 under the pomelo tree outside your bungalow: bread from the estate oven, Glenburn's own marmalade and eggs as you like them. At 10:30 the estate guide walks you through the factory, which works in the mornings in season, to the tasting table, where you choose the tea the kitchen will brew at your dinners. Lunch is carried down to Coffee Bari and set for two where both of Glenburn's valleys open below you. At 16:00 the masseuse in the candlelit room under the Water Lily Bungalow works green tea oil into your shoulders, and a green tea soak waits in your own bath.

The river for two, then candles on the terrace

No alarm. At 10:00 the estate jeep takes you down through the Simbong forest to the Rangeet, where lunch is laid on the sand for two with a cloth, two chairs and a pot of tea, and, if the river is low, the naturalist walks you over the 1902 Manjitar footbridge to the Sikkim bank and back (foreign passports turn at the far end, as it is not a permit crossing). The jeep climbs home at 15:30, and the rest of the day belongs to the evening. At breakfast the kitchen asked what you would like tonight, since Glenburn plans its menus guest by guest, from its own family recipes of tea-leaf pakoras to Burmese khow suey. Take the bath with the view first. At 20:00 the candlelit dinner is laid on the mountain-view terrace for the two of you alone, the estate dark below and the house quiet behind you.

Two rivers meeting, then a fire in Kalimpong

Breakfast is unhurried and the car leaves at 10:30, back up the estate track and down the Peshok Road. At 11:15 it pulls over at Lovers' Meet, about 4 km above Teesta Bazaar, and you look straight down on the two rivers you have spent three days beside: the Rangeet dark green, the Teesta paler, meeting over a spit of white sand. Then across the Teesta and up to Kalimpong, 37 km and about two hours in all, to the MAYFAIR, the old Himalayan Hotel. Lunch at Tiffany from 12:30. At 15:30 your guide drives you up Durpin to Zang Dhok Palri for the late light over the Teesta valley. Back by 17:30, the fire in your Heritage Room is already burning: we called housekeeping at 16:00.

Nothing happens before 09:30. Then your guide takes you to St Teresa's at 8th Mile, a parish church built in the Buddhist gompa style and blessed on 19 January 1951. Its Last Supper, altar and communion rails were carved by the priest who designed it, Mgr Aurelius Gianora, and its Stations of the Cross were painted by Thomas Shen; sit as long as you like. Lunch is at Gompu's, the Tibetan family kitchen beside Maharani Chowk, where a bronze bust of Queen Victoria sits in a carved Newari pavilion: order momos and share. At 14:30 the MAYFAIR spa has a Balinese massage waiting if you want one, paid at the spa; if not, the garden and a book. At 16:15 the car climbs to Deolo, 1,704 m, and we pour tea from a flask as the gorge fills with shadow. Dinner is by your fire.

The car leaves at 10:00: 86 km and about three and a half hours down to the Teesta, into Sikkim at Rangpo and up past the edge of Gangtok to Pangthang, about 1,870 m, where Taj Guras Kutir sits in its own forest. At Rangpo an Indian partner shows photo ID and a foreign partner the e-permit filed before the trip. Your driver from the hills hands you to the resort around 13:30 and briefs the Sikkim-registered driver we have booked for tomorrow. Lunch at Machan. At 15:30 the J Wellness Circle: a steam ritual, then Nidra, two hours of slow massage that ends with the face and scalp, made for sleep. We booked the slot with the room, weeks ago, because the afternoon ones go first. Dinner at Soi and Sake, the pan-Asian room, or sent to your door.

Day 7 · Gangtok (Pangthang)

Rumtek by late morning, butter lamps at dusk

Breakfast at your window, then at 09:30 the Sikkim car and your Gangtok guide take you across the valley to Rumtek, the Karmapa's seat, arriving around 10:45. Security at the monastery gate may ask to see photo ID, so keep it on you. Shoes off at the step, walk clockwise, and sit at the back if prayers are on. At 12:45 the car drops you at the top of MG Marg, where no car may enter, for a Sikkimese thali at Nimtho in New Market: rice, dal, fermented greens if the kitchen has them, and a pickle of round dalle chilli to be taken one bite at a time. The car moves to the far end while you eat. Back at Pangthang by 15:30 for a slow afternoon. At 18:00 the resort's butter lamp ceremony, which we requested at booking: you light the wicks together and dedicate them.

A nine o'clock car down to Bagdogra

The week's rule holds on the last morning. We ask you to book your flight home for 15:30 or later, so there is no alarm: breakfast at your window when you wake, bags carried down by the resort, and the car away from Pangthang at 09:00. At 07:30 our team checks the NH10 police update and tells your driver which road to take. The route runs back down past Ranipool and Singtam to Rangpo, then along the Teesta to Sevoke and the plains: 137 km and about five hours, with one stop to stretch and coffee from a flask the resort fills for you. You reach the departures kerb around 14:00, and our team watches the road and your flight until you board. If the only flight that suits you leaves earlier, the car would have to go at 07:00; the helicopter add-on keeps the morning slow instead.

Papers: an Indian partner carries a passport, Aadhaar or voter ID for Rangpo, Rumtek and every check-in. A foreign or OCI partner needs Sikkim's online permit for the two Gangtok nights, filed about 30 days ahead; Permits and visas, in our planning guide, has the rule.
Late October and November: it is autumn flush, and Glenburn's factory rolls leaf until the end of November, so the day 2 tour is at its fullest. It is also festival season. Dashain and Durga Puja fill the hills in mid October (Dashain's Tika day falls on 21 October in 2026), and Tihar and Diwali follow from 7 to 11 November. In those weeks holiday traffic slows NH10 and crowds MG Marg, so a road day may start earlier, and we tell you the evening before. If your Kalimpong nights fall in Tihar, the town puts oil lamps on its steps and Deusi singers go from door to door. Glenburn has eight suites, so write early.
Clothing: Glenburn lies about 1,060 m below Darjeeling, so from October to December its days run several degrees warmer than the town's 14 to 19 °C, and the estate says its winter nights do not fall below 7 °C. Gangtok days over the same months run 14 to 20 °C, with December nights near 7 °C and a little colder again at Pangthang. Pack layers, a warm jacket for evenings and something smart for the candlelit dinners.
Shoes: walking shoes with grip for the estate paths, and sandals or old trainers you can wet at the river, where rocks are slippery and the current strong outside the marked pool.
Altitude and roads: no bed on this journey sits above 1,900 m, so altitude is not a concern. The hill roads bend constantly; bring motion-sickness tablets if you need them and take the front seat.
Signal: Glenburn has no televisions and Wi-Fi only in parts of the bungalows, but mobile reception is good. If you are coming from abroad, buy an Indian SIM with your passport on arrival.
Cash: the houses take cards, but Glenburn has no ATM, so bring cash for small purchases and tips; Before you travel, in our planning guide, suggests ranges, and one envelope covers the Glenburn staff.
Celebrations: tell us three months ahead if you want the embroidered pillowcases, and a week ahead about any cake, allergies or dietary needs; we brief each kitchen before you arrive.
Flights: book your flight home from Bagdogra for 15:30 or later, so the last morning starts at 09:00 like every other. Send us the flight numbers and we time the road around them.

Six questions about A Himalayan Honeymoon

Can we do this honeymoon in five nights?

Only by dropping a house. Five nights split three ways means a new bed every other day and most mornings in the car, which is what this journey is built to avoid. Keep two houses instead: three nights at Glenburn and two in Kalimpong, with Kalimpong about three hours from Bagdogra on the way out. From December to February, Tea and Snow pairs Glenburn with a Pelling cottage and its own fire in five nights.

Is this honeymoon better in November or in March?

November, if the mountain matters most. It is the most reliable month for clear mornings, Glenburn's factory is still rolling autumn leaf until the month ends, and the evenings are cool enough to earn the Kalimpong fire. March brings rhododendrons, first flush tea and milder nights, but haze often hides the range, so the dawn from the four-poster becomes a gamble. December is drier still, with colder nights at Pangthang.

One of us holds a foreign passport. What do we send, and by when?

Nothing for the first five nights. Glenburn and Kalimpong lie in West Bengal, so the Indian visa covers them, e-Visa included. Only the two Gangtok nights need a permit. Sikkim has issued its Restricted Area Permit solely on the e-FRRO portal since January 2026, and the post at Rangpo checks it. Send passport and visa scans when you confirm, and we apply about 30 days before you cross. The Indian partner needs only photo ID, and the hotel collects Sikkim's ₹50 fee.

Can we add a morning at frozen Tsomgo Lake?

Yes, in place of the Rumtek day. Tsomgo sits at 3,753 m and is frozen or snow-rimmed through most of December to April. A Sikkim permit car leaves Pangthang at 09:00 with the permit we file the evening before, you spend an hour at the shore and are back by 16:00. A foreign partner can go too, with a protected-area permit added to the Sikkim one. It is never your first morning in Sikkim, and the car turns round if either of you feels unwell.

Is Glenburn private enough for a honeymoon?

Yes. The estate has eight suites in two planters' bungalows, so it never feels full, and the Singalila Suite is in the Water Lily Bungalow, which has its own smaller dining room and the massage room. Dinner can be served for two away from the shared table, and breakfast comes whenever you want it between 07:00 and 11:00. There are no televisions and Wi-Fi is patchy, which most couples count in its favour.

What would bring the cost down?

Glenburn is the big lever. Swap its three nights for a heritage hotel in Darjeeling, such as the Windamere or the MAYFAIR, and the journey costs noticeably less, though you give up the estate: the river day, the factory and the suite that faces the range from bed. A lower room category at Taj Guras Kutir trims it further. Ask, and we price each version side by side, with every rate dated.
