Can you see Everest from Darjeeling? What Tiger Hill, Sandakphu and the mountain flight really show

We are asked this more often than any other question about these hills, usually by someone who has just booked a flight to Bagdogra and wants to know whether the highest mountain on earth comes with it. The answer has two halves, and the first one disappoints people. No, you cannot see Everest from Darjeeling town. Yes, you can see it from Tiger Hill, 11 km away and 545 m higher, on the clearest mornings of autumn and winter, and it will be smaller than the picture in your head. Here is where it shows from, how big it looks, who each option suits, and when it is worth building a journey around.

Why the town itself cannot see it

Go to the railings on the north side of the Mall on a clear November morning and Kanchenjunga, 8,586 m and the third-highest mountain on earth, stands over the rooftops about 75 km away. Now turn and look west. That horizon is a long wall of ridge: Singalila, which carries Tonglu above 3,000 m and Sandakphu at 3,636 m, both under 30 km away in a straight line. Everest, 8,848.86 m by the survey Nepal and China agreed in 2020, is 172 km off in roughly the same direction. A near ridge beats a far mountain, and from the town's 2,045 m the Singalila line simply sits higher in your eye than Everest does. That is why every driver in the district takes you to Tiger Hill rather than to a convenient spot on the Mall.

What Everest looks like from Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill is 2,590 m, up the Senchal road, and those extra 545 m lift you over the Singalila line. Kanchenjunga is almost due north, and it is the reason the tower fills. Everest is a separate piece of work. Find Kanchenjunga first, then swing your head a long way left, past the near ridge, until you are looking north-west, some 40 degrees off the mountain you started on. The two summits stand about 125 km apart, so this is a real turn of the head and not a glance. Three summits sit out there in one tight group: Everest and Lhotse all but touching, and Makalu a little to the right, back towards Kanchenjunga. First, fourth and fifth highest in the world, and at that distance a thumb held up at arm's length covers all three.

Nothing about that group announces itself. Kanchenjunga is about 95 km nearer, so it fills far more sky and turns rose while the valleys are still black, and Everest reads as a small dark triangle until the light reaches it. Our guides say the same thing on every clear morning: the light reaches the far west a few minutes after the near range has turned, so keep looking left once Kanchenjunga has colour in it. Guests who were promised the tallest thing on the horizon come down the steps let down. Guests who were told the truth beforehand come down pleased, because they found it themselves. The whole Tiger Hill morning, the token collected the afternoon before and the 04:00 start, belongs to Kanchenjunga at First Light.

The four places, side by side

Distances are straight lines to the summit. The rest is what we watch with guests, and what they tell us on the way down.

Sandakphu, where four of the five highest share one horizon

Sandakphu, 3,636 m, is the highest ground in West Bengal and stands on the border with Nepal. It is the one place we know on this side where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga line up on a single horizon: four of the five highest mountains on earth, the missing one being K2, far away in the Karakoram. Everest is about 145 km to the north-west and still no wider than a thumbnail. Kanchenjunga is about 68 km to the north and enormous, laid out as the reclining line people here call the Sleeping Buddha, with Kumbhakarna as the head, Kabru the face, Kanchenjunga the body and Pandim the feet. You wake, walk a few minutes up the slope behind the lodges, and both are in front of you at once.

The trade-offs are real, and we put them in writing before anyone books. The way up starts at Manebhanjan, about an hour from Darjeeling, and covers some 32 km of concrete and then boulder track. You either walk it over two days or ride it in three to four hours in one of the Singalila association's old Land Rovers, the only vehicles allowed on that road; the last 8 km above Kalipokhri takes about an hour of that on its own. The lodges are family-run, plain and warm rather than comfortable: heavy quilts, limited power, dal and rice from the kitchen, and nights below freezing from November. Singalila National Park closes from 16 June to 15 September, with West Bengal's other protected areas. Since 2022, guests on foreign passports walking up from the Indian side may not sleep in the lodges that stand on Nepali ground, so we book the government huts, which are plainer still. The flight, if you want Everest large

Everest fills a window properly only from the air. Buddha Air's Everest Experience leaves Kathmandu from about 06:15, runs east along the range and back inside the hour, on an ATR turboprop sold at half capacity so that every passenger sits at a window. The crew name the peaks as they come, from Langtang Lirung to Shishapangma over the Tibetan border and Cho Oyu, and at the far end the aircraft comes within about 32 km of the summit, five times nearer than Tiger Hill. It flies beside the range, never over it, and it does not land, so you are back in the city for breakfast. What the crew do in the cabin at that point, and what a grey Kathmandu morning does to the plan, belongs to Everest by Air.

Cloud is the only real risk, which is why a spare morning belongs behind the flight instead of a tight connection. Everest by Air is four nights from Kathmandu built around that dawn, with breakfast by helicopter on the terrace at Hotel Everest View, 3,880 m, as an option for anyone whose doctor agrees to it. Which one suits whom

• Parents and grandparents over 70. Tiger Hill or the flight. Tiger Hill asks for no walking beyond the tower steps, but it does ask you to be in a car at 04:00 in near-freezing air, and on the fullest mornings cars are stopped well below the top, which turns into a walk up the road. Tell us that this matters and we plan the morning differently.
• Anyone with a heart or lung condition, or who has never been high. Not Sandakphu before you have read our altitude rules and spoken to your own doctor. You sleep two nights at 3,636 m up there, with the nearest hospital several hours below. The helicopter breakfast at 3,880 m is shorter, but it is higher and reached far faster.
• Children. Tiger Hill, easily, if they can be carried to the car asleep and fed at seven. We take children to Sandakphu only when they already walk hill days at home and their parents are honest with us about it.
• Anyone who cares most about the photograph. Sandakphu, two dawns, in late October or November rather than spring, when haze softens everything after the first hour.
• Anyone with three nights in the hills. Do not chase Everest. Spend the mornings on Kanchenjunga, which is the mountain these hills were built to look at, and treat Everest as a bonus if the sky is generous.

When to try

Everest asks for better air than Kanchenjunga does, because the far west is the first thing the weather takes: the range at 75 km can stand clear on a morning when the group at 172 km never appears at all. That is the argument for the heart of the clear season rather than its edges, and for more than one dawn.
